Color as a Design Tool – The Soul of a Space

Color is much more than just a decorative surface—it is a central design tool in architecture. In his lecture, Prof. Buether demonstrates how color, as a functional, atmospheric, and psychological element, shapes spaces and creates a sense of identity.

He combines insights from color psychology with design practice and makes it clear that color shapes not only forms, but also emotions, perception, and behavior.
According to Buether, colorless architecture loses its resonance with people, whereas spaces designed with color in mind promote well-being, orientation, and a sense of belonging.

Using vivid examples from research and practice—ranging from hospitals and educational buildings to urban landscapes—Buether demonstrates how color design can be understood as a service to people: evidence-based, empathetic, and ethically responsible.

“Color is not mere beauty, but a sensory medium that connects us to the world.” — Axel Buether
