Colors That Build Trust – My Talk on Color Psychology at NIVEA

Today, I had the opportunity to speak at an exclusive corporate event hosted by the cosmetics brand NIVEA, in front of numerous members of the press, about the evolutionary functions, cultural symbolism, and profound psychological effects of colors. In the context of the launch of new products, I explained how colors influence our experiences and behavior—and why brands can create emotional connections through the strategic use of color.

NIVEA is a prime example of the strategic power of color: its iconic deep blue conveys a sense of security, relaxation, and trust. When combined with white, it evokes additional associations such as purity, freshness, and lightness. This color choice is far more than just aesthetics—it is an essential component of the brand’s identity and has established NIVEA as a synonym for skincare and reliability across generations.

At the same time, the brand demonstrates how colors can be used in distinct ways within a product line: For sun protection products, NIVEA combines its familiar blue with warm shades of yellow and orange to convey protection and a summery feel. Men’s grooming products feature darker, more striking shades, while delicate pastel tones and soft color gradients in women’s skincare emphasize lightness and skin-friendliness. This creates a visual language that makes the diversity of the product range immediately understandable at a glance.

Colors are not merely a decorative element—they shape our perception, our behavior, our emotions, and our decisions. I’m fascinated by the idea of sharing this knowledge with the world and showing how color psychology can be strategically used to build strong brands. Everyone is a color expert and can learn how color influences brand loyalty.
