The pure white that makes Wimbledon a legendary tournament, the belt colors in judo that indicate a competitor’s skill level, or the yellow jersey worn by the overall leader in the Tour de France: Some sports, sets of rules, and rituals are characterized by specific colors. Where do certain color codes come from, and what do they mean? A great deal of research has been conducted in psychology on the power of colors.

We know, for example, that a tactically smart choice of colors can be a deciding factor in a competition when two teams are evenly matched. Do teams dressed in red really win more often than others? Because sports are also about aesthetics, issues of design, fashion, and media presentation play a role.
