Where does his enthusiasm for the subject come from? Axel Buether, who holds a doctorate in architecture, recalls a specific moment: He was lying on scaffolding, just below the ceiling of a Gothic church, setting a stone in place. Then the morning light streamed through the windows. “Suddenly it dawned on me that the stone is merely a means to an end. It’s not about the stone at all.
It’s about people being lifted up to God by this atmosphere. All the sculptures, images, and people are just part of a grand staging.” Buether quickly realized that he was fascinated by the staging itself—and thus by the question of what actually defines atmospheric spaces. …
