Interim report research study: “Assessment of the psychological and medical effects of color and lighting design in intensive care medicine by patients, relatives and staff”

As we have established during several inspections, observations and discussions in intensive care medicine, many key factors in the area of colour and lighting design can be improved and optimized for the well-being and state of health of patients, the trust and satisfaction of relatives and the work motivation and identification of staff. In design practice, however, there is a lack of clear guidelines and recommendations that are based on the current state of research and practice and can be applied in the opinion-forming, planning and decision-making process of clinics. The reason for this is the fundamental lack of study results in this field of application, which can be observed worldwide. The planned study is to be based on initial, much smaller precursors (Richter, P. G. & Ragaller, M. (2003) Assessment of a color-redesigned intensive care unit room by patients and staff.

The planned renovation measures based on the existing color and lighting concept for both wards of the Clinic for Intensive Care Medicine offer a rare opportunity for a scientific study. Both the condition before the renovation and the condition after the renovation are recorded empirically so that comparisons can be made. The information is collected via interviews (qualitative method) and questionnaires for patients, relatives and staff (quantitative method). Survey questionnaires as well as film and photographic observations and documentation are planned as media.
