According to assessments by the OECD and the European Commission, which were made as part of the PISA study with far-reaching consequences for the educational practice of the countries, art does not have the same significance for the successful participation of people in modern societies as the core disciplines of mathematics, languages and natural sciences. Today, the demands on the general education of future generations are shaped by the forces of globalization and the economization of all areas of life in society. The general education school subject of art is not exempt from this, which is why I would like to focus in my presentation on the considerable importance of core topics of artistic education such as creativity, problem solving and visual communication in the social fields of architecture and design, the teaching of which is indispensable for the success of individuals in modern societies.

A TRANSDISCIPLINARY PROJECT OF THE DEPARTMENT OF ART EDUCATION AT THE UNIVERSITY OF SIEGEN
Based on the consideration that art education is characterized by a close relationship to art practice and art studies, to philosophy and aesthetics, to school and extracurricular teaching, to pedagogy, to cultural education and art mediation, we will explore its relationship to these fields in the planned series of lectures and discussions. Do the reference fields form a basis or perspective for art education or are they in a dialogical relationship with it, in which both disciplines can learn from each other? It often involves unresolved or difficult relationships, border crossings, territorial demarcations or the emergence of one from the other, i.e. reciprocity.

Instead of defining and limiting art education, we try to outline it through overlaps with other disciplines. The transdisciplinary aspects and interfaces are what make art education so special. It is the points of contact that give rise to content and forms from which didactic questions arise.

A series of lectures in the 2018/19 winter semester marks the start of an ongoing series of guest lectures in art education on other artistic and academic fields.
