“Nice living” in prison?
Prisons are unpleasant places. Because the deprivation of freedom in desolate, isolated surroundings fulfills one purpose of punishment: it is intended as a deterrent. At the same time, however, prisoners should also be prepared for life in freedom. However, this would require a change in the architecture of prisons. The fact that the design of buildings has a far-reaching influence on their occupants also applies to prisons. But what are the connections between architecture, psychology and human behavior? Could “nicer” prisons, for example, reduce the propensity for violence among inmates and improve the chances of resocialization?
