Prof. Dr. Axel Buether – Institute for Evidence-Based Color Psychology

Founder of evidence-based color psychology

Prof. Dr. Axel Buether is one of the world’s leading color experts and is regarded as the most influential representative of evidence-based color psychology in the German-speaking world. As Professor of Visual Communication at the University of Wuppertal and a doctor of perceptual psychology, he researches the effect of color on perception, behavior and well-being – and translates these findings into applicable strategies for design, communication and health.

At the heart of his work is a paradigm shift: color is not understood as an aesthetic means, but as a fundamental organizing principle of perception, communication and behaviour.

With the Institute for Evidence-Based Color Psychology, which he founded, he combines international research with practical application. He develops scientifically sound color strategies, expert opinions and concepts for companies, institutions and public clients – with the aim of making color effects systematically usable.

As the author of authoritative works on color psychology, including the bestsellers The Mysterious Power of Color and The Great Book of Color Psychology, he has shaped the understanding of color in science, design and the public.

Public presence & international recognition

When it comes to the impact of color, leading media in the German-speaking world regularly turn to Axel Buether. His expertise is equally in demand in news, culture, science and design – from public broadcasters to leading media and international magazines.

He explains color in all its dimensions: from everyday life and society to brand, fashion, product and architecture to art, culture and the color worlds of different cultures worldwide. In doing so, he succeeds in classifying complex contexts precisely, comprehensibly and in line with the latest research – and thus has a lasting impact on the public perception of color.

His work is the result of international research collaborations and cooperation with companies, institutions and public clients for national and international markets.

Awards such as the Red Dot Award and the German Design Award as well as memberships in international expert committees – including the Scientific Peer Review Committee of the International Colour Association – underline his professional recognition.

Career

Axel Buether’s professional career began with an apprenticeship as a stonemason and the restoration of sacred buildings – an early exploration of the effects of light, material and space.

He studied architecture at the TU Berlin, the UdK Berlin and the Architectural Association London (with Ben van Berkel / UNStudio) and realized numerous projects at the interface of design, perception and space – including the Bertelsmann Pavilion at the Expo 2000, the water crater at the Landesgartenschau Bad Oeynhausen/Löhne as well as exhibitions and installations in museums such as the Deutsches Hygiene-Museum Dresden and the GRASSI Museum Leipzig.

With his doctorate at the University of Stuttgart on the subject of the semiotics of visual space with Gerd de Bruyn, Karl Schawelka and Karl Gegenfurtner, Axel Buether located his academic work at the interface of architectural theory, art history and the psychology of perception.

The resulting publication Die Bildung der räumlich-visuellen Kompetenz describes the neurobiological basis of visual perception and its significance for design and communication.

Axel Buether has been appointed to several professorships – an expression of his breadth of expertise and academic recognition: at Burg Giebichenstein University of Art and Design Halle(Color Light Space), at Hanover University of Applied Sciences and Arts(Perception Psychology and Creativity), at the University of Siegen(Design and Design Theory) and finally at the University of Wuppertal, where he now holds the professorship for Didactics of Visual Communication.

What I can do for you – and what that means

Product & Brand

  • Consulting
  • Research
  • Design

90% of product evaluation is based on color alone – in under 90 seconds. +80 % brand recognition through consistent color language. Evidence-based color strategy for product development, packaging, corporate design and brand management.

Space & Health

  • Consulting
  • Research
  • Concept

Color atmospheres through light and surfaces – measurably effective on health, well-being, motivation and staff recruitment. Integrated into existing construction and renovation budgets, without additional expense.

Art & Culture

  • Consulting
  • Research
  • Cooperation

Color is as omnipresent in the cultural history of mankind as it is in nature – and just as little understood. Art science interprets what color means. Evidence-based color psychology explains why it works: on the basis of evolutionary biology, neurobiology and perceptual psychology. This is an empirical approach that is unique in art and culture.

  • Workshops
  • Exhibition concept
  • Didactics
  • Publications
  • Media

From wine magazines to hospital journals, from news reports to specialist congresses. The explainer of colors can be booked for keynotes and workshops of all formats and much more: he writes, advises on exhibition concepts and develops didactic formats.

From stonemasonry to science – and to practice

As a young stonemason in the churches and cathedrals of the Osnabrück region, Axel Buether asked a question: Why does color and light affect people the way it does? This question launched a career that took him from the Bauhütte to the architecture college, from there to a doctorate, to the institute, to consulting market leaders and to millions of readers and listeners. What is special about this path is that he has never stopped asking the original question. Every research project, every consultation, every book is another step in the search for the answer – and another step in making this answer available to others.

PROMOTION The doctorate at the University of Stuttgart – “Semiotics of the Visual Space”, grade 1.0, Summa cum Laude – laid the scientific foundation. First reviewer Prof. Dr. Gerd de Bruyn (architectural theory, Stuttgart), external reviewer Prof. Dr. Karl R. Gegenfurtner (psychology of perception, Gießen). The constellation of two renowned experts in architectural theory and psychology is programmatic for what characterizes Buether’s work to this day: Scientific precision across disciplines.

RISE TO LEADING EXPERT – What followed is one of the most unusual careers in the German-speaking academic landscape. Four appointments to professorships at art colleges and universities – including a professorship for perceptual psychology and creativity, which proves that his qualifications were recognized by appointment committees of specialist psychologists at the highest level. In 2012, he accepted an appointment at the University of Wuppertal, where he founded the Institute for Evidence-Based Color Psychology, which is now one of the few institutions in the world to combine basic research and applied consulting at this level. At the same time, he built up the best-known expert presence in the German-speaking specialist field: Tagesschau, Heute Journal, arte, Deutschlandfunk, Spiegel, FAZ, Vogue. His book “Die geheimnisvolle Macht der Farben” (Droemer, 2020) became a Spiegel bestseller and opened up the subject to an audience of millions. “Das große Buch der Farbpsychologie” (Droemer, 2025) sets a new standard.

If the media want to explain what colors do to us – call Axel Buether

Tagesschau. Today Journal. Arte. Deutschlandfunk. Time. FAZ. Spiegel. Vogue. Stern. The media that regularly draw on his knowledge are no coincidence – they are proof that complex science and public resonance are not opposites. Prof. Dr. Buether is both: a researcher with strict scientific standards and an explainer who is listened to by millions. Colloquially, some call him the “color pope” – which says less about him than about the trust he has earned over decades.
