Institute for Evidence-Based Color Psychology – University of Wuppertal
Where research, teaching and application become an integrated system.
Founded in 2012, the Institute for Evidence-Based Color Psychology combines basic scientific research with real-world applications in design, architecture, brand development and health.
The focus is on the systematic investigation of the effect of color in the interplay of perception, behavior and environment – empirically, interdisciplinary and always in relation to practice.
Research & scientific network
The research area is linked to my Chair of Didactics of Visual Communication at the University of Wuppertal.
Here, continuous accompanying research is carried out on real projects – in collaboration with students, doctoral candidates and an international network of researchers. It is one of the largest of its kind in the field of evidence-based color psychology.
The Institute receives impulses from a growing scientific network:
Through my many years as chairman of the German Color Center, of which I am now a member as curator for the scientific field of“Color Psychology and Color Perception“, one of the most important interdisciplinary networks on color in science and design in the German-speaking world has been significantly developed.
International conferences with several hundred participants and cooperation with universities and research institutions form the basis for a continuous exchange between theory and practice.
Color in the head – University of Tübingen
Application: Color Research & Design Lab
Science meets design in implementation.
The Color Research & Design Lab forms the practical arm of the institute. Under the direction of architect and color designer Heike Krauss, scientific findings are translated into concrete color concepts and design solutions.
The aim is to develop concepts that do not decorate, but work:
They create orientation, strengthen identity and sustainably improve the quality of living, working and experience spaces.
The result is well-founded, ready-to-implement concepts for:
The Lab’s work is based on the latest findings in color psychology and combines functional, aesthetic and communicative requirements to create coherent color systems.

Your added value
Color decisions are made intuitively in most organizations – with correspondingly high risks for perception, impact and long-term success.
The Institute for Evidence-Based Color Psychology combines research, teaching and application in a unique approach: findings are not generated in the laboratory, but in interaction with real projects – and flow directly back into practice.
This results in color concepts that are not only convincing in terms of design, but are also proven to work.
