Which color to wear that day is usually decided spontaneously. Depending on how you feel, you are more likely to go for a bright or muted shade. But seasons, current fashion trends or upcoming occasions also influence the decision. But what does the color of the clothing radiate and how does it affect others? STYLEBOOK found this out in an interview with color researcher Axel Buether and summarized it here.

You don’t have to be a color scientist to figure out that dark and earthy tones are popular in winter. The days are short and the temperatures are low. Black, gray or a dark brown reflect the season best. But why do we choose these shades when we could brighten up the winter with a cheerful selection of colors? …

Color preferences and color home of humans

Our color preferences are shaped throughout our lives by the rooms of our childhood. In this context, I like to talk about color home, which triggers a feeling of familiarity in many people. But for decades, feelings such as homeliness, coziness and a sense of security were considered old-fashioned and reactionary. Native color tones, in which natural browns play a central role, are back in vogue today, for example combinations such as earth brown with gentian yellow, oak brown with moss green or leaf brown with violet purple. Natural brown tones and their combinations are not only found here, but in all densely populated regions of the world – just think of brown ochre with lemon yellow or sandy brown with azure blue.

Fashion trends and color composition

Nostalgic fashion trends such as country house style, home style or vintage style are cultural creations of the urban bourgeoisie that have little in common with the reality of everyday rural life. The ubiquitous brown of typical rural buildings not only looks simple, rustic and cozy in the warm glow of burning fires and candles, but is also enlivened by fresh colors. During the day, large windows ensure that the blooming colors of the garden can also be enjoyed indoors. We compose all these natural colors into a yearning image that helps us overcome feelings of alienation.

Flowers don’t care about color trends, they always bloom in their traditional shades. But what is it like in current fashion? Which colors are “in” this year? And why? Professor Axel Buether, leading color researcher from the University of Wuppertal, notes that we currently have “such a megatrend towards colors that look healthy.”

Natural tones for a clear conscience

In a time of a generally bad environmental conscience, natural tones reminiscent of earth, stones, sand or wood apparently make their wearers feel good. At best, the garments look as if they have not been treated with color at all.

On the other hand, according to the color researcher, the current strong longing for joie de vivre is also likely to lead to a great desire for fresh spring colors. “A vibrant, bright yellow or a really beautiful May green – these are all optimistic shades that will be very popular in spring.”

The most important color: Green

In general – the color green! “For us humans, green is the most important of all colors,” says color researcher Axel Buether, “this is mainly due to the fact that it is our ancestral habitat, our entire perception system has developed in nature.” This is why the color green has a “natural, lively effect on us and as a sign of hope when things are going haywire in culture.”

“Pensioner beige” on the retreat

So green is hope. Maybe the clothes too. Or blue. Or red. If the desire for fresh colors does not generally decrease with age – at least that is still a widespread cliché.

“Unsaturated colors, shades of grey, the so-called pensioner beige” – according to our color expert, this dress code is on the retreat. Today, people who are retiring also want to “really get going when it comes to clothing, i.e. orange or yellow or even purple are colors that are very trendy for senior citizens.”
